The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
