Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
