Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
